While this book provides a comprehensive overview of the history of fashion within Australia, this chapter is particularly relevant to our case study with its focus on fashion in 1970s Australia. The language used is informal and engaging, rather than academic, and large colour, and black and white, photographs are used throughout. This chapter begins with a discussion of the midi/mini skirt length controversy of the early 1970s, and moves on to explore topics such as hot pants, swimsuits, underwear, platform shoes, pantsuits, hair styles, and denim jeans, as well as the influence of politics, public opinion, film, high fashion, Australian symbolism, ‘Ethnic’ styles, punk, and the idea of unisex fashion. The Sydney Opera House opened in 1973 and Joel explores its influence on Australian culture and fashion. While the author is knowledgeable and authoritative on the topic, the discussion remains lightweight and lacks detailed interpretation that subsequent writing has achieved. However given this work and the author’s proximity to the time period discussed, this chapter is still a useful and valuable resource to include in our research.
