Leong and Somerville, both fashion and textile curators at the National Gallery of Victoria, discuss the turning points between the 1960s and the 1980s that spurned the development of a distinctly Australian fashion culture. They cover a variety of topics including the shift away from reliance on European haute couture for inspiration, the introduction of fashion magazines geared toward Australian audiences, the fresh ideas of returning expatriates and the establishment of the Fashion Design Council; the chapter explores how these things changed the fashion industry in Australia. They illustrate how this new fashion market fostered a widespread belief in Australian fashion as an alternative to international design and translated into local and international success for many designers. In contrast to other writing about this period, Leong and Somerville do not fixate on Australiana; they instead provide an overview of the full complement of emerging Australian fashion styles during the period.
